Document Summary
Behavior is determined by the nervous system. Now called neuroscience: collaboration between psychologists, physiologists, neuroanatomists, neurologists, biochemists, neuroendocrinologists biologists, engineers and computer scientists, attempts to determine the relationship between behaviors (thoughts/feelings) and brain activity/hormone systems. Nervous system: organs: hippocrates - most powerful organ (controls all other, our nervous system controls behavior/mental processes, peripheral nervous system (pns) & central nervous system, pns (cns) figure 4. 2 pg 91. Cranial nerves, spinal nerves transmit sensory information from the rest of the body to the cns, transmit motor/other commands from cns to body. Skeletal: controls muscles, relaying motor commands from the brain. Autonomic: automatic control of involuntary muscles (heart, diaphragm) and internal organs: sweating, crying, sexual arousal, subdivisions: Sympathetic fight or flight , high arousal/alertness, inhibits digestion. Parasympathetic rest and digest , promotes digestion: cns. Glial cells support/protection, supply oxygen and nutrients to neurons, remove dead cells, neuron insulation, communication in the brain.
