Normative influence: a form of social influence that leads a person to conform because he or she fears the consequences of deviating from group norms. Private conformity: conformity that occurs when an individual changes behaviours and beliefs to conform to a group. Public conformity: conformity that occurs when an individual changes behaviours but not beliefs to conform to a group. Obedience: compliant behaviour produced by the commands of authority, respecting legitimate authority figures such as teachers, parents, and police officers. Obedience increases when someone has credibility, characteristics of requests (incremental or made quickly), and the setting.
