Document Summary
Language is used as a method for communicating information (ideas, thoughts, and emotions) There are many forms of language used by humans (spoken, music, etc. ) Information can only be communicated if both the sender and receiver understand what"s going on: comprehension precedes production. A form of communication must have 3 properties to be considered a language. Language: a socially agreed-upon, rule-governed system of arbitrary symbols that can be combined in different ways to communicate ideas & feelings about the present time & place, and other times & places: semanticity. This is the extent to which a language can use symbols to transmit meaningful messages: braille and sign language are semantic languages used by humans, generativity. Language combines a limited number of words and a few rules to convey many ideas (generativity: in no language is there a single word for every thought or idea, displacement.
