Gellner"s definition: nationalism is primarily a political principle that holds that the political and the national unit should be congruent. Shared identity, culture, language, history, music, food (smith) Element of recognition: must recognize someone is a part of your nation. Clifford geertz: anthropological primordialism (exclusive national boundaries) Anthony d. smith: ethnic origins of nation (exclusive national boundaries) Nationalism as an imagined community , we feel a sense of pride for people we don"t know because we come from the same community but in reality this community does not exist. These imagined communities come from mass literacy, print capitalism (mass production of print matter). These two things made print matter accessible to many people, who were able to read these because of mass literacy. This meant that many people were reading the same things, about shared sense of history, all forming a sense of nationalism. Elie kedourie- ideological tied to liberalism.
