Taking an area of the world that has not properly been part of your country and clamed it. When talking about colonialism we talk about different countries places in the world. Or we talk about it where a country claimed a place however didn"t go in large groups to claim the land. Decided that they would claim parts of africa for themselves because europe was a superior power and they wanted to civilize africa and save them. 90% of africa was colonized by europeans claiming the land, other examples linked also to trade routes, conquests. In 1960"s the empire draws back or is overthrown. Effect of participating in war led to african countries own demands for nationalism. Wwii changed perceptions of europe politicized colonies europeans seemed more vulnerable. Un promise of sovereignty at the end of war. Expectation that other counties would line up behind either the us or ussr.
