To become aware of some standard approaches to the study of politics. Empirical to see what is actually happening. To learn to recognize and understand a range of political ideologies. To develop academic skills in reading, search, writing, and group discussions. How do we approach the study of politics: normative, empirical, semantic. What concepts do we use to understand and evaluate politics? (the state, sovereignty, power, equality, freedom ) Concepts that kept coming up in relation to ideologies such as human nature, and what different theorists think about the different concepts. No fixed meaning depends on context, point of view and application etc. Meanings (of political concepts) are themselves political. Ideologies cluster meanings, create coherent compositions of meanings, develop new meanings.
