Document Summary
Cell membrane is made up of a lipid bilayer embedded with proteins. Does not let water soluble substances pass, enabling the ability to maintain different mixtures and concentration of solutes inside and outside the cells. Passive movement of solute down its concentration or electric gradient. Short distance for the solutes to move. Difference in charge and a concentration between two adjacent areas that works on an ion. Promotes momentum of ions toward the area of opposite charge. If there is more solute in another side, water will diffuse out to even it out, raising the water levels. Increase in solute = increase in osmotic pressure. i. e. there is more solute on one side but if we don t let the water level rise or diffuse, there is a pressure built up. Cells maintain equal concentration of solutes going in and out at the expense of the volume.
