Lesson 1. 2: drug development, drug trials and drug adverising. How to access validity of a clinical trial. The irst step in development of a new drug molecule is to idenify a biological target for the potenial drug. Example: target could be a receptor that when acivated causes an increase in blood pressure. Targeted receptor protein is isolated, and the characterisic are studied. Next, synthesize a lot of the receptor protein and test the ability of a large number of chemicals to bind to the receptor. Once the compound that binds well to the receptor is ideniied it"s studied to determine the pharmacological efects of chemical at molecular, cellular, organ, and whole animal level. Drug discovery stage of research can take anywhere from 2 to 8 years. Studies conducted prior to tesing the new drug in humans. Determines detailed mechanism of acion of new drug.
