Colour of skin was a label with associated rights/meanings/status. These notions are dependant on the place and historical context. With this comes the idea of privilege. Test strategies: listen to each song and write the names and identify markers from the song. Caribbean culture and african music is very culturally derived. African rhythms have dominated popular music for more than a century. When we study music, we need to consider that there are a number of social and racial groups associated with the different musical genres. Race is an arbitrary category that we have used throughout history to assign differences but thee differences are constantly changing. Notions of nationality, gender and class is also always changing. Important quote: culturally distinct groups under normal circumstances have no need to assert their ethnicity or even to be aware of it. Only when their cultural orientation is threatened or in crisis does the importance of maintaining it become an oppressive matter.
