Week 3: the political economy of health + care-case study breast cancer + pink ribbons inc. Think critically about charity + place it within neoliberal context. To understand the ways disease is produced through charitable discourses. Disease + illness produced through all sorts of discourses (biomedical, racial, gender, lay- able bodied, psychological, neoliberal, research) Remember that all of these discourses intersect + overlap. Long history of groups collectively organizing through disease. Activism = key to changing perceptions of disease (see brenner in film) But we must also look at institutional + organizational forms of struggle in cultural context. I. e. , professionalization, increased funding, don"t entirely explain cotemporary cultural roots + significant of breast cancer movement. Move from: stigmatized, individual tragedy that is dealt with privately, neglected epidemic warranting public debate, attention, organizing etc, enriching/affirming experience: focus on survivorship rather than living + dying with bc.
