A social category that historically and currently captures differential access to power and resource sin society. Prejudice or discrimination based on the belief that race is the primary factor determining human traits and abilities. Belief that genetic and inherited differences produce the inherent superiority of one race over another. Affects health, stress: indirect heath affects through poverty, underemployment, poor neighbourhood. Racism is a process, a condition, a relationship that violates its victims physically, socially, spiritually, materially and psychologically. Racism constrains both self development and self determination. Unearned and invisible benefits and advantages that come with having white skin in a white dominant society. White people benefit from living in a racist society: analysis of racism and white privilege require analysis of the social system. Allan g johnson: what happens when people participate in a social system depends on two things. What people actually do as they participate in the social system one moment to the next.
