HLTH 101 Lecture Notes - White Supremacy, White Privilege, Individualism
Document Summary
Hlth101 - racism, colonialism and indigenous health (week 7) Racism = belief that race is primary factor determining human traits and abilities - one race is superior or has the right to rule others or that there is hatred or intolerance of other races. Analyses of racism and white privilege require analysis of the social system; an individualistic model doesn"t work . Being born into a racist culture has consequences - we all carry racist ideas and ideologies (i. e. gender, race, etc. ) We must reduce racism and discrimination in order to improve health. We need laws and policies that outlaw discrimination to banish racism. Both about individuals and not about individuals. Problems with individualism: (1) ignores the difference between individuals who participate in social life and the relationships that connect them to one another and to groups and societies, (2) personal solutions can"t solve social problems. Concept of racial purity is scientifically meaningless - race is a social construct.
