Document Summary
Tobacco use is the single largest cause of premature death in industrialized countries. Tobacco use is associated with higher rates of cancer (especially of the lung, larynx and mouth); heart disease; stroke; lung disease; hypertension, and peripheral vascular disease. It is estimated that tobacco smoking caused 100 million premature deaths worldwide in the 20th century. It is the only consumer product that, when used as directed, kills half the people who use it. In 2013, only 15% of canadians over the age of 15 smoked. It is no wonder that low-income smokers consider cigarettes to be a form of psychological therapy: smoking is a fairly effective (though unhealthy) way to deal with stress and trauma, quotes from smokers: However, disadvantaged groups are exposed to a range of factors that make them more likely to become smokers and makes smoking cessation more difficult.
