HIST 365 Lecture 1: Seminar I
Document Summary
Material culture is defined as the stuff that is created by a culture, it can be anything made my humans or influenced by humans (landscapes, can be natural but many times are influenced by humans). Material culture is a reflection of a larger culture. Culture is a collective name for the behavioural patterns that are socially required and transmitted by means of symbols. In canada we drive on the right side of the road, in the uk they drive on the left side of the road. The symbols that we use, the language we use, culture is more than just language, it is also behaviours. We need to consider the culture and objects together, we can not consider them as differing. Cultural values and beliefs take form and are emphasized in material objects that a specific culture has. One of the main uses of material culture is to look at non-literate society.
