Rise of the united states as a major consumer power. Peruvian government saw influx of revenue during guano boom, but failed to remain prosperous. Coffee became staple of brazilian and colombian exporters. Provided brazil with revenue, when combined with foreign capital, for industrialization. Colombian coffee exports dispersed economic development and federated patterns of political power to specific regions. Mexico lost significant territory to us and struggled to create an independent republic. In mid-nineteenth century, europe entered period of agricultural boom and therefore, demand for processed guano fertilizer was high. From 1841 to 1879, peru exported hundreds of millions of dollars of guano, stimulating economy. Guano very helpful in european agricultural revolution and population increase, but then europe turned to chilean nitrates, which proved to be a more effective fertilizer.
