HIST 286 Lecture Notes - Lecture 10: Constitution Of Chile
Document Summary
Supporters of military tending to be part of the wealthy class, opponents were more likely to be poor. Resistance and lack of support increased within all classes as time went on: economic failures and successes. Poor economic performance by military regimes would lead to resistance and mistrust by the populations. Economic success could work against military as they would remain in power after economic crises were fixed: perceived end of crisis. Violence was one-sided and was usually the works of the government against opposition: the importance of the civilian opposition. Military needed popular support of civilians in order to validate their rule. Critics pointed out how the military regimes weren"t living up to their potentials. Mothers led opposition to military rule (i. e. mothers of the plaza de mayo in argentina). Popular opposition to military rule contributed to the transition from military rule to democracy, though it wasn"t the primary factor: changes within the military.
