Recognize and define some of the key vocabulary terms associated with the military. Assess reasons why states need armed forces. Roles of the armed forces explore some of the roles that militaries have performed in the twentieth century. Understanding military culture discuss a theoretical perspective on military organizational culture. Case study: the rise of air forces examine in detail two twentieth century military cultures. Use for foreign policy aim: warfare, peacekeeping. Aid to civil power: aid during natural disasters, asserting arctic sovereignty, suppression of armed resistance. Other roles of 20th century armed forces have pursued: pursuing internal policy initiatives. Other militaries engage in specific aid to civil power actions that armed forces can engage in. The mexican army has been involved in combatting the country"s drug cartels, for that country"s war on drugs. (reading: mexico"s changing drug war: genocide/ethnic cleansing. If a state"s military and political regime are acting in concert, militaries maybe used to enact genocidal policies.
