The new man creates himself in the socialist world view- trotsky. It was the responsibility of the party to help with this process. Bolsheviks believed that people were oppressed due to inherited mental shackles: due to years of serfdom, tsarism--> oppression, these old habits lived on within people-- bolsheviks project was to transform the sphere of everyday life. Hygiene: points to something about the bolsheviks and how the revolution was a force of modernizing russia. The civilizing process= development of social norms. Modernization, richer people, an educated work force= modern economy: bolsheviks believed that literacy would enable people to master themselves, and the worlds around them. Religion is the opiate of the people. Freedom from superstition, from religion: religious habits were seen as obstacles to the modernization of the country, attack of religion from marxism. Kept the working class from rising up, makes them subdued: atheism - bolsheviks took anti-religion very literally. Churches destroyed, made into working clubs, red corner.
