Crusade being used in a negative and positive connotation. Studies became popular in the 19th century. They were interested in the romantic sense of the crusades: chateaubriand wrote about himself as being a crusader, disraeli was a politician and took a grand tour of the middle. Crusades were inspiring literature, theatre and art (walter scott, William wordsworth and dore/delacroix: there was chivalry and exoticism of the orient. The first world war was seen by many as a last crusade: war on terrorism being named a crusade by bush after 9/11. Christian campaign against the muslims; west and east (cid:1) (cid:1) 27 november 1095: pope urban preaches crusades at clermont. 1096-1101: the expedition of the first crusade gets underway: major figures of the crusade had gathered their armies to journey to constantinople. Jerusalem taken by the expedition in july 1099. Establishment and settlement of western latin" or frankish" principalities of outremer over next half century.
