Module xi: collapse of communism and the end of the cold war. This module looks at the timeline of 1989 - 1991. At times western and soviet leaders found themselves in a position of observers struggling to respond to the events that happened in the period of three years. Many people made the collapse of communism possible in eastern europe and the su. As a state, the su could not withstand the collapse of the ideology that had legitimized its existence. The last few years of the cold war saw a greater increase in a number of actors powerful enough to rein the cold war and eventually bring its close. Political changes in many eastern european countries, despite the objections and resistance of the communist leaders in their countries. A good example is vojciech jaruselski in poland who compromised, others like erich honecker from germany, refused to accept new realities. Ceausescu used brute force to crush any political protesters.
