Imperialism: old (before the 19th century) and new (common. Themes: wherever we had colonization and loss of sovereignty, one basic commonality is the desire for resource extraction (natural resources). There was a need for new resources and raw materials in the 18th century. Before this, all kinds of imperial efforts came combined with a plan for resource extraction (mineral, animal, etc. : trying to subdue political enemies. Many of the older forms of imperialism happened as an effort to subdue a political enemy. In order to gain political supremacy, invasion conquest and eventual taking over sovereignty of the people remains a common theme throughout history: gaining wealth through the processes of resource extraction. 19th century (resource extraction opens new markets led to enhancement of wealth of the nations). This is not always true (history of spanish empire: imperialism always came with territorial expansion. Sometimes that was the stated goal and sometimes that was the result.
