Fixed laws of nature: plato & aristotle concept of divine being: god part of nature subject to laws we created. Must conform to fixed property & materials: makes universe ordered & regular: allows for knowable and observable laws. Averroes: no contradiction between religion and philosophy: reason proves faith, arise by metaphorical statements in religious texts, philosophy help us understand religions better aristotle help us understand. Things revealed to us by prophets, fundamentally true. Misunderstanding fault of the author/text difficult to perceive. Problem with reader perceive things easier or differently. Maimonides: distinction between religion and philosophy: each helpful in own way, should not be used to explain the other, aristotle thinks best is philosophy: methods for reason, not theology. Help us but do not go far enough: keep more separate. Help us piece gaps in our faith. Areas of philosophy vs. areas of faith in maimonides studying nature of god.
