Minny has a black eye, celia, as a woman who has experienced domestic violence supports her and suggests that she hit the man who hurt her over the head with a frying pan. Celia cannot understand that for black women, leaving their husbands in this time period made them more of a target for harassment and discrimination. Does not understand that leaving a husband exposes the man to further instances of violence by targeting him as a threat. Income is significantly lower for people of colour at this time, so leaving her husband would have serious socio-economic repercussions for minny. Demonstrates that domestic violence holds varying implications for white women versus women of colour, and celia does not understand this as a white women. Celia foote provides minny with a beautiful spread of food she has been taught to cook herself.
