Devs 221, week 2: looking at space and place. Physical being and place, being of who we are and occupation of a place. Develop an appreciation of aboriginal identity and its many forms. A lot of aboriginals use the term to self-identify. It is just a word and has places where it is acceptable. It is a legal term and in historical context. (indian. It is used as a familial term, in community they refer to themselves as indian at times. It does have negative connotations because columbus assigned that term on the first day of his landing in the caribean. He said that they were ingenious, they would be good servants, and that they would become christians because they did(cid:374)"t see(cid:373) to ha(cid:448)e a (cid:396)eligio(cid:374). It was a way of re-establishing history (putting the white man on the right side and building up masculinity: not just a familial term but it carries weight.
