Large political body that rules over territories outside its original physical boarders, typically taken by force. Centrally controlled by a dominant group, often an ethnic ruler. Decentralized forms of rule, direct or indirect (as seen with m any different types of empires ex. British vs. the belgium) and usually involve local collaborators drawn from ruling elites. Usually maintained by forms of violence, not always in some cases the appearance of freedom is worse, and almost always results in unequal power relations between the core and periphery countries. Layers of hierarchy within the colony (language, race or religion) Later empires involved private companies to off-load costs ex. However they were always fragile, changing and complex. Examples of some of the world"s most powerful empires include the han dynasty, roman. Empire, mongol empire, aztec empire, mughal, ottoman and the caliphate. Highly contested concepts/words: academically, politically, complicated by prefixes, sub-, post-, neo, definition and practices change over time.
