Document Summary
Gphy102 lecture #4 the global energy system (chp 3: all objects emit electromagnetic radiation, energy that exists as waves, different types have different wavelengths and frequency. Wavelength is the distance from one crest to another. Frequency are the waves per unit time: high amounts of energy have high frequency and large wavelengths. The electromagnetic spectrum: from short wave radiation to long wave, between ultraviolet and infrared is out visible spectrum, purples are shortest, red longest wavelength, near ultraviolet and near infrared are just on the edge of our vision. Shortwave radiation: comes mostly from the sun, ultraviolet. Don not penetrate atmosphere easily: visible light. Shorter wavelengths perceived as violet, longer as red. Wavelengths ranging from 0. 7 to 1. 2 micrometers: shortwave infrared radiation. Wavelengths range from 1. 2 to 4 micrometers. Longwave radiation: wavelengths greater than 3 micrometres, middle infrared (3-6 micrometers) From sun, also emitted through combustion: longwave (thermal) infrared (6-300 micrometers) Emitted by cooler bodies, for example, heat.
