A classification system is not a parameter, thing , or property, but is really a general cheat" sheet/description. The various systems take easily measurable parameters and put them together to get a general idea of a rockmass. They ask the question, what kind of mechanical behaviour do we expect from this? : they systems, while helpful, do not always give an accurate idea of the rock strength. The final number does not say everything and critical think must still be used to analyze potential pros and cons of building into various rockmasses. Q, rmr, and rqd do not capture the different failure modes so that is a shortfall of them. Fracture frequency (ff) from a drill core represents the amount of times a fracture occurs in a drill core or rockmass. Instead, the more complicated rqd is calculated instead in most rockmass classification tests. The angle the core is taken from the rockmass can really affect the rqd.
