Geology 106 - week 6 (rivers and flooding) Europe: the economic loss is much larger then the effect of people. Asia: population density along rivers, intense storms (monsoon), and land use changes. The water cycle water flow isn"t just from precipitation but snowmelt as well. Rivers: transportation system in the rock cycle. Sediment in rivers: dissolved matter is transported invisibly in the form of chemical ions. Floodplain: flat surface adjacent to the river channel that is periodically inundated by floor water, not always on both sides of the river (can be on one side) Base level: is the theoretical lowest level to which a river may erode. Effects of changes to land use: *** go back. River morphology development: outside edge of the bend, velocity is higher and is therefore eroding material, inside edge of the bend, material is deposited, when rivers move rapidly they erode, when rivers move slower they deposit materials.
