Geology 106 - week 5 (introduction to landslides) Canadian geological survey landslide statistics: a landslide is ant type id slope or downward movement of rock and/or sediment. Mass wasting: the downward movement of rock and soil under the direct influence of gravity, role of mass wasting, geological process that often follows weathering, combined effects of mass wasting and running water (erosion) produce stream valleys. Flows: downstream movement of unconsolidated material, usually saturated, in which particles move out and mix within the mass, very slow, creep, rapid, earthflow, mudflow or debris flow, extremely rapid, debris avalanche. Controls on and triggers of mass wasting: gravity is the controlling force, other factors, saturation of the material with water, overstepped slopes- unstable, loss of anchoring vegetation, earthquake ground vibration. Slide motion: rotational, curved slip surface, producing topographic benches that can be rotated and tilted in the upslope direction, translational, planar, move along inclined slip planes.
