She was around the time of duncan campell scott (and the confederation poets) She was not one of the confederation poets because she was a woman and indigenous. Her father was a mohawk chief and was a translator for the government. Because of her dual identity, she became a sort of middle ground, they lived in the reserve, but in a mansion on the reserve in six nations. She was the youngest of 4 children. She spent her life divided be her two identities, though her preference seems to be to her mohawk side. The song my paddle sings earned her place in the canadian cannon and made her famous, she had other, more political poems and writings that were more difficult to pallet.
