Canon: a (cid:271)ody of work, usually (cid:272)onsidered the nation"s literature. Start with this because it is pre-european contact. States that the land itself has a history. A(cid:272)tually (cid:862)oratune(cid:863) a mix of oral and literary telling. Nation specific in english or in indigenous language i. e. ojibway, mohawk. Indigenous: a collective term: other collective terms: native, aboriginal, first nations. First nations: excludes the metis and inuit: adjectives not nouns. The mohawk were a part of these relations. 5 tribes: mohaw, oneida, onondaga, cayuga, seneca. Most bands have a 2 part government: a government in charge of the traditional aspects of life, a government in charge of canadian values. Story is very important in the mohawk culture: very detailed. Clan started in 1484 (cid:271)y the gitrisa and wut"suwet"en nations of northern bc. Reading traditional indigenous literature: oral markers, transgressions, violence, vengeance, transformation, existence of good and evil, human and animal relations, use of humour, spirituality, emphasis on land.
