She is introduced by a string of negatives, talking about what she is not. Not poor or neglected: father has two good livings, and he was not in the least addicted to locking up his daughters . Father was a parish, second income was the eldest son, who got married. Threat of a tyrannical father is not an empty threat, tilney is the tyrannical father that. Catherine does not have, and poses serious problems. Mother didn"t die in childbirth, enjoys good health. Not beautiful: she had a thin, awkward figure, a sallow skin without colour, dark lank hair, and strong features . The point of defining her in negatives is to make fun of the heroine stereotype in her genre. She may be unqualified to be the protagonist of the novel . Not very ordinary character, and allows reader to see themselves in her character.
