Clerics has a monopoly on scripture, because they were the only ones with the authority that could translate. Exposes contradictions in scripture: john 2. 1 (marriage at cana) justifies limiting marriage, used by clerics to get married only once , but genesis 1. 28 encourages marriage (9-29); multiple marriages. The bible can be used to find evidence for and against the idea of multiple marriages. Rejects the mindset that whatever the bible doesn"t explicitly permit must be forbidden (multiple marriages); i. e. christ only attended one marriage, we most only attend one marriage if we want to live a good christian life. Inverse mindset: whatever the bible doesn"t explicitly forbid must be permitted ( yit herde i nevere tellen in myn age/ upon this nombre diffinicioun ) Her argument is silly, because solomon had many wives, therefore she should be able to marry many times.
