Document Summary

Section 6. 1 introduction to multiple life functions. So far our treatment of survival analysis and life-contingent payments has been restricted to the life of a single individual. Frequently, however, such payments are dependent on the survival of more than one person. To develop expectations of when such insurance or annuities pay out, a status must first be defined. A status is a group of a finite set of lives, each having an individual future lifetime random variable. We will denote any general status as u. A status must be bound by a set of rules determining its survival and failure. For example, a last-to-die (or last survivor) status is considered alive as long as one of its members is living, whereas the joint life (or first- to-die) status expires upon the first death of any of its members. We will assume that the survival of each individual life is independent of all others.
