Vast and diverse armies of kings gave war a new dimension: armies supporting a king are larger than those that a city-state could muster. At the level of city states, there are stronger elements of continuity between classical and hellenistic era. Large scale conflicts between kingdoms (and later rome) Wars between kings and subjects who attempted to break free from their control and make themselves independent. Defensive wars against invading barbarians or raiding pirates. And as a king, you need victories to prove your legitimacy. Army relied on king for their salary (supplemented by loot) and expectation of land and privileges on retirement.
