Last tme: moved on from city of rome, started to talk about empire. Imagery of augustus himself spread to communities of rome where local dignitaries were copying it at the local level. Similar consensus on what is good taste. Augustus brought peace and security to everyone: pax augusta and securitas augusta. Put up by people of elite level in towns before creation of empire: forum of tibur (tivoli) Monuments put up by a freedman named varenus in town. Was a slave and is now giving back to his local community by installing something that they need measuring tables: set up in the forum of the town in the center. Forums have markets, usually about once a week, and merchants would have products to sell. Problem was keeping everybody honest these holes are standardized holes of a certain size that the thing being purchased can be poured into to ensure that it was the proper size.
