CLST 203 Lecture Notes - Lecture 5: Lightning, Phidias, Cup-Bearer
Document Summary
The sons of cronus and rhea: zeus, poseidon, and hades: zeus is god of the sky, poseidon is god of the sea, hades is god of the underworld. Their daughters: hestia, demeter, and hera: hera oversees marriage, domestic life, and fertility, demeter is goddess of the harvest, hestia is goddess of the hearth. Children of zeus and leto: apollo and artemis. Note how zeus and cronus father almost all the gods and goddesses. The realm of the humans is neutral territory. Humans make sacrifices to the gods and the gods like those sacrifices. They don"t assign a god to reign over the humans lest that god screw up the sacrificial processes. Zeus and the fates determine a disproportionate amount of what goes on earth but, in general, no one has absolute power. Hades and hestia cease to be associated with olympus, creating the canon of twelve.
