Invoking the muses muses are the daughters of zeus + mnemosyne (memory personified) Each were responsible for a certain form of art. Suggested that art was given to us/inspired by the gods. Invoked because divine inspiration lends credibility & muses want their respect. The beginning: chaos chaos: the void, not a god or goddess. Gives birth to: gaia, tartarus, eros (physical affection) Later o(cid:374) also gi(cid:448)es (cid:271)irth to erebus & night. Gaia is female, and the first true deity. Half are male, half are female, and mate with eachother. Oceanus + tethys: oceanids (f water deities) Devouring father first offspring betrayal by father (+ deceitful wife)
