On opening day they wanted to re-enact sea battles so they flooded the colosseum and showed the battle of actium and people were killed in the battle. In a preserved letter, tacitus writes to pliny and says that he knows that he saw the eruption of mt. Pompeii had stepping stones at the cross walks because the streets were flooded with sewage for drainage so you stepped on the stones: this meant that there were standardized gauges to get around the stepping stones. Remember the amphitheatre at pompeii was (cid:271)uilt (cid:271)y sulla"s soldie(cid:396)s so they (cid:449)ould(cid:374)"t be idle.
