In the case of temples, must have been constructed by large communities. Communities who got together and agreed to build. Symbol of their piety and devotion to god. Start to see cities having corporate identities as opposed to centering themselves around individuals. What homer says or sings represents greek identity. Have someone from city who was mentioned by homer, then city is extra special and important. Promoted trade and brought people who were visiting from other communities into sanctuaries. Large, important sanctuary in kind of out-of-the-way place. Olympians profited by bringing people in to engage in trade, Olympians profited by bringing people in to engage in trade, etc. Wanted to know what to do in a certain sense. Most reliable sense would to get prophet from sanctuary of apollo. Different cities wanted to get in on panhellenic action.
