Travelled mainly by sea, so it makes sense that everything is around the water: cheaper to move things across the mediterranean than it is to transport it. 50 km inland, especially because the greek topography is not conducive to land transport. Incredibly mountainous: settlements isolated by geography which prevented greek states from coalescing into single greek empire, due to this, greek politics should always be thought of as local. Sparta is quite different from other greek city states: sparta is land locked so not really a seafaring nation vs. athens, which was based around the sea.
