The chemical structure of the shells of foraminifera microscopic marine organisms found on the ocean floor depends on water temperature. Thus it is possible to determine if the layers of sediment which contain the shells were formed in colder or warmer periods. The shells can also be tested (radiocarbon and uranium) to give the sequence an absolute dating.
