Site lost; survivors eventually died so the memory lost also (200-300 years later, people couldn"t go back and say that that is where pompeii was because they were unsure) Legends grew, names of sites forgotten: civitas shades of atlantis (name of pompeii was even lost, so people started to call it civitas which means the city. ) Herculaneum also lost, modern city grew on top (resina). They only did this because they had no idea that herculaneum was laying beneath them.
