Document Summary

Lecture #18 arthur evans: knossos i october 26th. We think of evans as the 3rd generation of archeology (pompeii = first, schliemann = second) Pompeii: at first accidental discovery of beautiful objects led to treasure hunt for more; progress eventually especially with fiorelli. Schliemann ( father of archeology ) was different because he was a great believer in ancient stories, and he thought they were based on fact. Ancient sites were buried and that they could be found by excavation. Schliemann discovered a whole new world: the bronze age, home of great homeric heroes. Travellers have already headed to crete by 15th c. ; in 18th c. lots of tourists (none of these people were excavating) Evans was not the first person to excavate here, but he is the most famous. He had great family wealth (benefitted from his family"s wealth, unlike schliemann who made his own). His father was a businessman, scholar, collected british antiquities.
