Document Summary

Biggest difference between athenian and modern society: society works for the group, not for the individual. Not like modern times when we treasure individual rights and freedoms. They will give up individual freedoms easier for the success of the group. Very hierarchical, obsession with having someone in command: usually the strategy for societies in difficult times --> easy decision making solution to have one person making the big decision and everyone else just following. Obsession with maintaining stability of family groups: now we don"t really care about the personal economies of families. Now: voting for administration and the people who make decisions. Athenian: they don"t make decisions, they just choose their leader: the power of few, allow people to make their decisions. No direct influence of athenian democracy on ours. In the past, founding fathers looked at athens as a possible model for government; it actually acted more like inspiration. Developed over time because of the conditions/environment at the time.
