Being roman in the roman empire: it depends on where you are, to some extent, the map is showing the roman empire at its greatest extent, goes from britannia at top to egypt down at the corner, from spain to mesopotamia, many different peoples of different ethnic origin with different customs, with different building traditions, with different levels of society before they become romans, egypt, syria and near east, where thousands of years before the romans had large cities and very sophisticated civilizations, in somewhere like britannia, people were still living at the tribal level, temporary structures mostly, and some smaller community places but nothing like the big cities, once they are conquered by the romans, they all become roman to some extent, roman empire lasted for hundreds of years, they were able to take people of various different backgrounds and make them feel content to be part of this bigger identity.
