Document Summary

Optionally read: technique 5 and 6 from organic laboratory techniques , fessenden, fessenden and. Feist, 3rd edition, or chapters 18, 19, and 34 from the organic chem lab survival manual j. w. zubrick, In this experiment you will learn how to use one of the most useful operations available to chemists: distillation of liquids. Volatile liquids can be separated from non-volatile substances by distillation and, frequently, mixtures of volatile liquids can be separated into their component parts by fractional distillation. Add two boiling stones: arrange a heating mantle, distillation head, thermometer/adapter, condenser, receiving adapter, and a 50-ml graduated cylinder (to measure volume of distillate) as shown in figure 1 for simple distillation. Mantle should be raised above the bench for easy removal in case of over-heating. The apparatus for simple distillation: remember to build from the bottom up so that the complete arrangement will be at a suitable height for comfortable work.
