Document Summary

Van der waals forces: a collection of weak attractive forces between atoms/molecules. Instantaneous/induced dipoles: displacement of electrons cause polarization giving rise to an instantaneous dipole which can effect neighbouring molecules causing induced dipoles. Hydrogen bonding is the strongest: h is hydrogen bond donor and other molecule is the hydrogen bond acceptor. Greater surface area lead to more of these forces. Strength of these interactions depends on size of molecule that increases polarizability. Polar molecules experience the same thing and will have a high boiling point. Most dense state of water is liquid because hydrogen bonds can work. Ice is less dense because they are farther apart. Surface tension: energy or work required to increase the surface area of a liquid. Forces on the top of water is why you can make a compass from a charged needle and water.
