BIOL 102 Lecture Notes - Lecture 1: Horizontal Gene Transfer, Binomial Nomenclature, Proteome
Document Summary
Unity: modern life displays common set of characteristics. Diversity: forms of life prosper in different environments. New species: accumulation of mutations: mutation inheritable change in genetic material, beneficial change mutation increase in population natural selection. Horizontal gene transfer: genetic exchange between different species. Asexual species (ex: bacteria, resistance to antibiotics) Taxonomy: classify and group species: 3 domains: bacteria, archaea, eukarya, kingdoms: animals, plants, fungi, protists. Domain, kingdom, phylum, class, order, family, genus, species. Proteome: collection of proteins made in cell under specific conditions. Determines cellular and organism function: genome proteome function. Scientific method: test ideas and make predictions that can be experimentally tested. Reductionism: reducing a complex system to it"s components. Can"t be proven to be absolutely true. Theory: broad explanation of aspect of natural world. Extremely likely to be true, viewed as knowledge. Hypothesis testing: observations about natural phenomenon, hypothesis explains natural phenomenon, experimentation prediction verdict, data analzyed, hypothesis accepted/rejected control samples and experimental samples.
