Raphael and workshop: decorated by raphael and workshop, contains grotesques, there are some mythological scenes represented within the loggia. Loggia within the vatican palace: take up very little space on the walls, these scenes tell the stories of apollo and marsyas, the musical competition between apollo and marsyas. If there is a meaning, it is a positive link between the pagan meaning of sacrifice and the christian mass. Inside each section, there are monstrous creatures against a white ground: raphael engages with an almost archaeological reconstruction of this ancient precedent, raphael creates some fantastical hybrids, typically, there are hybrids that are devils. In nero"s golden house, there were hybrid animals and common animals: but there were not exotic beasts (even thought nero had an menagerie, within this loggia, the inclusion of exotic beasts is novel. In creating this new and ancient space, raphael includes creatures that are from far away.
